School Readiness Assessment
A school readiness assessment is an assessment used to determine whether a child is prepared to start formal schooling, usually in Grade 1. These assessments typically evaluate various aspects of a child's development to ensure they have the necessary skills to succeed in a school environment.
THE KEY AREAS THAT MAY BE ASSESSED:
COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
This includes the child’s ability to think, reason, and solve problems. It might involve basic numeracy, understanding of concepts like shapes and colors, and simple memory tasks.
LANGUAGE & COMMUNICATION SKILLS
The child's ability to understand and use language effectively is crucial. This area assesses vocabulary, sentence construction, understanding of instructions, and ability to express thoughts.
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
Physical Development: This includes fine motor skills (such as holding a pencil or cutting with scissors) and gross motor skills (such as running, jumping, and balancing).
SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The test evaluates how well the child interacts with others, including sharing, taking turns, and responding to authority figures. It also looks at emotional maturity, such as handling frustration and separation from parents.
INDEPENDENCE
Assessors look at the child’s ability to manage basic tasks independently, such as dressing, feeding themselves, and going to the bathroom.
